Scarborough Council Tackles Seagull Dropping Woes
Scarborough Borough Council is taking urgent action to address the persistent issue of seagull droppings in the town centre, responding to widespread frustration and disgust expressed by residents. The problem has escalated to the point where some describe the town as being “caked in bird sh*t.”
Despite the efforts of a local cleaning contractor appointed by the council to address the problem, the issue has reportedly worsened over the past year. Residents have noted that the current cleaning efforts are ineffective, with comments such as “they can’t even get the bottom layer off.”
Councillor Tony Randerson, speaking on behalf of the council, acknowledged the severity of the problem and emphasized the need for immediate action. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that the streets are kept as free as possible from rubbish and bird droppings. The council is exploring additional measures to discourage seagulls from nesting on roofs, including the installation of netting. Councillor Randerson emphasized that building owners also have a responsibility to address the issue.
Budget cuts over the past decade have impacted the council’s ability to address cleanliness issues, with a notable reduction from £1.56 million in 2010 to £948,000 currently allocated for litter clearance, fly-tipping, and maintaining litter bins.
Councillor Randerson stressed the importance of making a positive first impression, stating, “The very least this authority can do is to ensure that the first impression is a good and lasting one and not the unwanted alternative.”
